Time-lapse in situ observations of permafrost thaw

What we did:

Over 63 days, we heated the ground in Fairbanks, Alaska, which deepened the permafrost table by 1.5 m. We observed ~10 cm of subsidence. Property changes describe coupled thermal/hydro/mechanical processes before and during surface subsidence.


What we learned:

This experiment provides field calibration for existing multiphysics thaw models developed theoretically, numerically, and in the laboratory.​
